Four years ago, Nicole Stefanski took over as the head coach of the girls? varsity basketball team at the College of Staten Island High School/McCown Expeditionary Learning School (CSI/McCown).
It took 10 games for the former St. Peter?s High School for Girls star to get her first win that initial year. On Feb. 27, the former Advance All Star, will create another memorable date for the Dragons? program as she guides her team into the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) A playoffs. The Dragons earned a first-round bye as the No. 24 seed, and will travel to Manhattan to take on No. 9 Norman Thomas.
Ms. Stefanski earned the nickname of General for her tenacious floor leadership as a point guard during her grammar school days at St. Rita?s. She then raised the rank to four-star status during her time leading the show for Bob Daggett?s extremely successful Eagles? teams.
The Dragons earned their first playoff berth in the Class A post-season when they knocked off Port Richmond 48-37 last week, assuring they would finish with a .500 or better season.
?This is a huge win for our program,? said Ms. Stefanski after the game. ?The girls played their hearts out and finished their layups and foul shots and took care of the basketball, something I learned from my coaches a long time ago.?
And now, the Dragons are following their coach.
