A burden that children should never have to bear - World Vision Blog

An eight year old Syrian refugee child named Layla[1] shares, ?I saw my cousin dying in front of me, so I always see this scene in front of my eyes.?

As children all over North America happily rummage through the cheerful remains of Christmas Day?s joys?festive gift wrap strewn about, the latest version of Halo blaring from 40 inch television screens?the existence of Syrian children presently seeking refuge in Lebanon is one far less carefree.? In this season of joy, it?s difficult to fathom that at least 66,000 children like Layla are coping with the loss of home and childhood as their families struggle to survive the displacement of war and onset of a cold, snowy winter in Lebanon?s Bekaa Valley.

*????? *?????? *

Over the past three months, Syrian refugees have poured across Lebanon?s borders at an exponentially increasing rate.? UNHCR reports that 154,387[2] Syrian refugees are currently residing in Lebanon.? Nearly 75 percent of these refugees are women and children; children who should be focused on homework and playing are instead grappling with educational upheaval, a lack of stability and anxiety and exposure as they face uncertain futures and adapt to life in a foreign country whose host communities do not fully accept them.[3]

In short, Syrian refugee children are bearing burdens no child anywhere should ever have to carry.

Unfortunately, experiences like Layla?s are not uncommon. ?In Robbed of Childhood, Running from War, a newly released World Vision report, World Vision found many children willing to share openly and ?at length about violence, death and the politics of war.?

In the report, which surveys 100 Syrian children aged 7-13 in the Central and Western Bekaa region of Lebanon, children spoke with World Vision staff ?about images of their homes and schools burning, people getting shot and tanks roving their neighborhoods. Even indirect exposure to violence such as images of dead bodies on the news, continues to haunt them.?

Wael, showing a book he brought with him from Syria. It is his most precious procession away from his real home. It is his geography book. He flips through its pages every now and then and dreams that one day he will return with it to his home to finish his education.

One child told World Vision:

?My three brothers died in Syria.? They were younger than me. They shot my brothers when they were playing with their friends on the street.?

The experiences of these children make one?s heart heavy?even as someone who has worked with survivors of humanitarian crises around the world, I cannot imagine a world in which my very young son, who should freely enjoy an existence crashing dump trucks around our living room, bearing the devastation and politics of war.? But children who have fled Syria are doing just that.?

?My brother is 13 and used to go to school in Syria. Here he works with steel.?

?My sister, 15, used to go to school but here she works at a laundry shop.?

Like many displaced children in humanitarian crises throughout the world, Syrian refugee children in Lebanon are sometimes forced to choose work over school. ?The reasons for this are many, including challenges with enrollment, language barriers (while Syrian children are taught in Arabic, the Lebanese system includes English and French) and the economic pressures facing refugee families. ?I cannot imagine a world in which my son has to opt of middle school to support our family?s financial needs.? But this is the reality facing Syrian refugee children every day.

In the midst of holiday festivities, after Christmas sales and time with dear family and friends, consider coming alongside Syrian refugee children in Lebanon to help them shoulder burdens children should never bear.? Now that?s a world worth imagining.

Make a donation to the Syrian refugee crisis. The number of refugees fleeing conflict-ridden Syria has tripled in the last three months, according to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency. More than 100,000 registered Syrian refugees are in Lebanon, where World Vision has been providing basic hygiene kits and food vouchers to help them survive. Your gift will help continue this urgent response.

[1] At the request of parents, the names of all children have been changed to protect identities.

[2] Note that this number represents only the Syrian refugees who feel it is safe to official register with UNHCR; there are many others believed to be living in Lebanon.

The Hottest Climate Change Stories of 2012

Global warming was hot news this year, literally.

Perhaps the most unavoidable climate story of 2012 was the warmth that gripped much of the United States, and to a lesser degree, the planet, throughout the entire year. Heat waves brought "spring in March" to parts of the country, and broke all-time high-temperature records in a number of places. This, inevitably, led to a discussion of global warming and the degree to which it contributes to some types of extreme weather, in this case heat waves.

In fact, prominent climate scientist James Hansen, of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and colleagues published research saying recent heat waves "were a consequence of global warming, because their likelihood in the absence of global warming was exceedingly small." Some other climate scientists, however, disagreed about the degree to which heat waves can be attributed to climate change.

Meanwhile, many of the top climate stories this year have become something like annual rites recently, as people around the world grapple with human-caused climate change, and attempt to address it and its effects. [7 Hottest Climate Change Stories of 2012]

Natural disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy (actually a hybrid storm) this year like others last year, have sparked discussion of the connection between climate change and increased risk for some extreme weather events. A majority of Americans also seem to be making the connection between extreme weather and climate change, according to surveys by the?Yale Project on Climate Change Communication?and the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication.

In reality, attributing any single weather event to global warming is tricky, though some scientists said the planet's increasing temperatures may have worsened Sandy. "The climate influences on this are what we might call the 'new normal,' the changed environment this storm is operating in," Kevin Trenberth, who heads the climate analysis section of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, told LiveScience at the end of October. For instance, the warmer ocean surfaces ? which fuel hurricanes ? may increase the risk that a storm will become more intense, Trenberth said. In addition, rising sea levels worsen the risk of flooding, the cause of much of the devastation Sandy wrought.

Likewise, global climate talks moved forward slowly, as they have in the last few years, against warnings that nations must curb the planet's rising greenhouse gas emissions or face dramatic consequences.

This year also brought some milestones. Arctic sea-ice cover retreated to a record low in September. As with unusually warming temperatures, the record sea-ice retreat did not come out of the blue. In recent years, the sea-ice cover has fallen below the average extent for 1979 to 2000, and, likewise, the first decade of this century was the warmest decade ever recorded in all continents of the globe, according to the World Meteorological Organization.

Scientists who study sea ice have blamed a combination of natural fluctuations and human-caused warming for the increased loss of ice, although some differ as to how much humans have contributed, Claire Parkinson, a senior scientist who studies climate at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in September.

Early in the year, the United States, once the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, saw its carbon-dioxide emissions from energy use drop to the lowest level since 1992, a decline the Department of Energy attributed to a mild winter, a shift from coal to natural gas and a slow economy. In 2011, the United States contributed 16 percent to the world's emissions from fossil fuel use, behind the 28 percent contribution from the top emitter, now China, according to a report by the Global Carbon Project.?

A holiday Surprise ? Elder Care Solutions of MI

The holidays are a much anticipated time of year for most of us.? Seeing family and friends, exchanging presents etc. make it a very exciting time.? However, for some the holidays bring unexpected surprises if they live out of town and haven?t seen the older adults in their life for some time.

An older adult?s level of functioning can change significantly over the course of a few months, even more so if it?s been longer since you were last together.? Here are some potential red flags that might indicate more support is needed:

  • Stacks of unopened mail
  • A fridge full of old, expired or moldy fruits, veggies, milk and yogurt
  • Unanswered messages on the answering machine
  • An?older adult seems to:
    • have more difficulty walking
    • have precarious balance
    • have less energy
    • tire easily
    • be?confused or forgetful

It can feel overwhelming when you first realize that all is not well, but there?s no need to handle it on your own.? Their physician might be a resource, and a Geriatric Care Manager can help you identify and put in place local resources that will make it easier for you to board that plane for your return flight.?

Happy Holidays,

Lynn

Critical Review

An article review of Yunfei? Chong ,2011.? ? The Research on how Chinese vocational education break through the current bottleneck of its development , Concurrent discussion on how to establish the mechanism of school enterprise cooperation in Chinese vocational education?. ????Zhengzhou Railway Vocational and Technical College

This article focuses on ?how to develop Chinese Vocational Education by establish the mechanism of school-enterprise cooperation . The authors have stressed the cooperation between schools and enterprises that appear to have a problem in creating a program of bilateral cooperation which respectively provide help to achieve a common goal or a win-win due to? the failure of the government to encourage partnerships between schools and enterprises.; government-lead ?. The author aims to highlight the collaboration between industry and academia like ?Dual System?? vocational education models in Germany that provide job internship ,one of the reason for difficulty of school-enterprises cooperation; administrative subordination;. Yunfei mentions that perhaps almost vocational colleges perfom actively, but it not accompany with enterprise or industry that did not contact the colleges forwardly.

This article is significant given that the difficulties of school-enterprise cooperation is lack of talent training as well as evaluated by educational expert. ?However as a result of somewhat abstract implications, the article would perhaps only be of interest on ?co-sponsorship mechanism and policy guarantee especially on government-lead.? The authors have used ?vocational education models to describe the government- lead in developing countries like ;Amerika, England, Germany and Japan; and to compare the efficient model of personnel training.Although showing differences in ??implementation but strives to achieve the common goal of providing provisions to ensure the training is going well. The author mention it provides good reference to strengthen the government ?lead, strengthen the legislation of vocational education, strengthen the overall plan and supervise, and establish the cooperation mechanism.

The author has started writing specifying keywords should be known and so began a discussion on the topic. The author have a very good in processing due to problems in school-enterprise Cooperation is more specific that can identify the cause of how the occurrence constraints to progress chinese vocational education. The topic has an objective to be achive. The author has made a claims that government-lead is the only way to break through the current bottleneck of vocational education development but ?an evidence was provided is not reliable. The conclusion also are drawn just a simple word and not complement. The principal of the text can be better organized

As a conclusion it can be said that the author has managed to transfer information on how to solve the bottleneck problem as experienced by chinese vocational education which should strengthen the school-enterprise cooperation.? To the success of this cooperation must be the government in terms of provision of assistance and reform The author seems to only look to the government-lead, although the schools are supposed to provide entrepreneurship education as recommended by Robert Kowasaki in her book, rich dad, poor dad where he suggested that education for entrepreneurship have since translated children from school. Similarly, vocational education should start at school with teachers who are trained as discussed by Qiu Feiyue and Lifang Le (2010). Quality education will produce a quality student . I am? agree with Malaysia system vocational school that was up grade to be a college and develop the teachers skill.

6 Ways IT Management Services Increase Business Productivity

6 Ways IT Management Services Increase Business Productivity

When you first seek out IT management services, you might be tempted to think that outsourcing these kinds of operations will only complicate your company and lower your productivity. After all, consultations on your information technology may seem to be the kind of business where you will end up paying for knowledge but will still have to do the work. Fortunately, this is not the case, and when it comes to information technology, NYC is a great place to seek out excellence. When you need support, outsourced consultation gives you a ton of flexibility in selecting a service provider that can suit your needs perfectly.

increase productivity

The following are six of the great ways your business can and will become more productive when you outsource your IT management.

Also Read:?4 Reasons Outsourcing IT Services are Becoming More Popular

One of the best reasons why outsourcing your IT operations is great is because it allows you to save personnel versus doing everything in house. While it might initially seem like having your own IT staff on the premises would make your operation more efficient overall, in most cases this does not happen. IT consulting can give you a lot of insights on how you might run the technological component of your business more effectively. For one thing, there is a good chance that a significant number of your employees are operating "in the field," so it doesn't really matter if your IT staff is physically close or not. Server access is accomplished off-site so often that most people can't even tell the difference.

Another great reason to outsource your IT operations is because it will save management time. Your management team, yourself included, have a lot of extremely valuable work to do. This work involves planning where your company is going over the next few years. Dealing with the headaches of IT operations will only distract you and other valuable members of your team from the most important work while you chase shadows and deal with putting out more fires than you should have to deal with. Overall, outsourcing will help your business work more efficiently because it will allow you to think with more clarity.

Another reason why outsourcing IT tends to have a positive impact on your company's efficiency is because it allows you to have better rules in place. In the world of IT services NYC lets you explore your company's maximum efficiency in a more controlled setting. While there is definitely something to be said for customization, in most businesses where there are more than ten people there have to be the boring, "corporate" rules that keep people from doing truly foolish things. These rules comes very easily from businesses where this is already their core operation. They know what works, what doesn't and how to implement rules through the use of methods that won't get in your way.

Another great reason why your company will operate more effectively with outsourced IT operations is that you will have less downtime to be concerned about. Downtime is a potentially devastating problem that can happen if your IT department is not up to snuff, or if you do not have adequate servers to handle your traffic during maintenance or when migrating everything to a new server. In most cases, you won't have this kind of backup infrastructure in place, and this can cost you dearly when your online operations need to pause for hours at a time. However, when you outsource IT support NYC is a great place to ease the burden of this downtime. The entire process will be transparent and highly efficient when it is handled by a company that does this exclusively.

A great reason why your business will be more efficient when you outsource IT functions is because it will allow you to focus on your core business operations instead of trying to manage your IT and costing your business valuable energy that your employees could be spending on their actual jobs. When your IT operations work well, your entire business works better because everyone can simply focus on their jobs instead of trying to work around ghetto-inspired "solutions" that barely work at all and that can stop working at a moment's notice.

Also Read:?Managed IT Services: Making IT Simpler

Finally, the last but not least reason we are going to discuss here why your business will run more efficiently when you outsource your IT operations is because it will allow you to reduce the level of? miscellaneous costs that would otherwise be associated with trying to run your own IT operations. Every part that a server may need, every additional thermal unit of air conditioning that those servers will need to function properly and every other small but necessary expense is an incidental that can drive up your costs. And every time your costs go up, your IT staff will be spending more of their time essentially doing busy work instead of doing more important tasks.

There are so many reasons why your business will work better when you start to outsource your IT related operations. The above are just the largest of these reasons, and every individual one of them will easily justify the decision to switch over.

PFT: Tebow reportedly asked out of Wildcat

Smith hauls in a long catch against Webster during the first half of their NFL football game in Baltimore, MarylandReuters

We know who all six AFC playoff teams are, and we have a pretty good idea of their playoff order. Week 17 isn?t meaningless in the AFC ? home-field advantage is still up for grabs ? but it won?t feature any dramatic changes in the way the AFC playoffs look.

The NFC is another matter. Nine teams remain alive for the six playoff spots, and although the Falcons have already clinched home-field advantage, everything else is jumbled.

Below we provide the state of the playoff race, through Week 16:

AFC

1. Texans (12-3): Houston clinches home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win over the Colts, or if both the Broncos and the Patriots lose.

2. Broncos (12-3): Denver clinches home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win over the Chiefs and a Texans loss to the Colts. The Broncos will be the No. 2 seed and have a first-round playoff bye with if they beat the Chiefs and the Texans beat the Colts.

3. Patriots (11-4): New England clinches home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win over the Dolphins, plus both the Texans and the Broncos losing. New England can also earn the No. 2 seed and a first-round playoff bye with a win over the Dolphins and either the Texans or the Broncos losing.

4. Ravens (10-5): Baltimore has clinched the AFC North and cannot get a first-round playoff bye. The Ravens will be the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs unless they beat the Bengals and the Patriots lose to the Dolphins, in which case the Ravens would be the No. 3 and the Patriots would be the No. 4.

5. Colts (10-5): Indianapolis will definitely be the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs regardless of what happens next week. The Colts will most likely play at Baltimore in the wild card round.

6. Bengals (9-6): Cincinnati will definitely be the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoffs regardless of what happens next week. The Bengals will most likely play at New England in the wild card round.

NFC

1. Falcons (13-2): Atlanta has clinched home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

2. 49ers (10-3-1): San Francisco earns the No. 2 seed with two more wins.

3. Packers (11-4): Green Bay earns the No. 2 seed with a win over the Vikings in Week 17 and one San Francisco loss. Otherwise, Green Bay will be the No. 3 seed.

4. Redskins (9-6): The winner of the Week 17 Cowboys-Redskins game wins the NFC East and will be the No. 4 seed. If the Redskins lose to the Cowboys they can still be a wild card team if they end up in a three-way tie at 9-7 with the Seahawks and Vikings, Seahawks and Bears or Vikings and Bears.

5. Seahawks (9-5): Seattle needs one more win to clinch a playoff berth. Seattle would need to win out while San Francisco loses out to win the NFC West.

6. Vikings (9-6): Minnesota clinches a wild card with a Week 17 win over Green Bay. The Vikings also earn a wild card if the Giants, Cowboys and Bears all lose.

In the mix: The 8-7 Cowboys clinch the NFC East if they beat the Redskins in Week 17. The 9-6 Bears clinch a wild card if they beat the Lions and the Packers beat the Vikings in Week 17. The 8-7 Giants get a wild card if they beat the Eagles and the Vikings, Bears and Cowboys all lose.

Re: Data Structure for Place Names - Family Tree Maker software ...

First, FMT hasn't changed its "structure" for place name; rather it changed its structure for resolving place names. Place names can now be resolved with an address, or a cemetery or church, or village or hamlet - in the far left part of the name.

In turn, FTM did something which is bewildering to a lot of us: it then added a heirarchy feature; which means you can see a listing of states, then counties within a state, cities with a county, etc. This is bewildering to a lot of us because we wonder why ALL place names couldn't be placed in a heirarchical view. After all, the heirarchical view is nothing more than reading a location name from right to left, instead of left to right.

That said, these are the reasons for putting a cemetery, church name, local name in a city (any large city), village name, hamlet name (espeially New York):

1) You can see all the people that lived in that particular place in the Place Workspace, seleting the place name and look at the panel on the right side of the screen.

2) Maintain separate GPS of locations. Now that GPS devices can find a location to within 10 feet, or even closer - it is (or will be) necessary to have a specific GPS set of coordinates for either the front gate of a cemetery, or even a grave within the cemetery; specific GPS for a specific address of a house, etc. Not all of us are up to speed in this technology (I know I'm not), but the future is coming at us!

Booker won't run for NJ gov, eyes US Senate seat

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ? Newark Mayor Cory Booker has ruled out a bid for New Jersey governor and is eyeing a run for U.S. Senate in 2014.

Booker, 43, announced his decision on Twitter on Thursday, ending months of speculation over whether he would challenge Gov. Chris Christie in a marquee matchup next year.

One of the Democratic Party's biggest draws said in a follow-up statement that he would finish his second term as mayor of the state's largest city in mid-2014 and would strongly consider running for Senate after that.

"Let there be no doubt, I will complete my full second term as mayor," Booker said in the statement, which was posted on Facebook and linked to on Twitter. "As for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for the United States Senate in 2014."

It's not clear whether U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg will retire or run against Booker, and probably others, in a Democratic Senate primary. Lautenberg is 88.

U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone indicated his continued interest in a Senate seat on Wednesday.

Booker reached out to Lautenberg on Thursday morning, but it's not clear whether the two talked. Booker also made a round of calls to Democratic county political chairs and state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, another Democrat said to be considering a run for governor or another office.

"It will be a privilege, an honor, to continue his legacy of service," Booker said of Lautenberg in a 3-minute video that accompanied his announcement. Booker was not available for questions.

Many Democrats viewed Booker as having the best chance at unseating Christie, a Republican. One Democrat, state Sen. Barbara Buono of Metuchen, has announced a gubernatorial candidacy so far. Now that Booker's out, the party will look for decisions from others including Sweeney and Sen. Dick Codey.

Christie's popularity is at an all-time high following his handling of Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. In announcing his re-election bid last month, Christie said he was motivated, in part, by the chance to lead New Jersey through the post-storm recovery, which he said won't be complete when his first term expires.

Booker and Christie historically have had a good working relationship. They agreed on the elimination of lifetime teacher tenure, for example, and on the need for government workers to pay more for their retirement and health benefits. The two even appeared in a "Seinfeld" parody video this year.

But Newark schools remain under state control and the city relies on the Christie administration for millions in aid to make up its deficit. As Booker eyed a gubernatorial run more publicly, Christie ramped up criticism of the mayor's fiscal management.

Critics say the celebrity mayor is much more popular beyond the city's borders than within Newark. Former Gov. Brendan Byrne, a fellow Democrat, cast doubt on Booker's ability to be as an effective an administrator as the governorship requires.

There is little doubt that Booker can raise money, however. He has brought in hundreds of millions in development and donations to the city, including a $100 million education donation from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

In the video, he touted other achievements of his administration, including more budget stability, court reforms and a reduction in crime.

"Amazingly, in a down economy, Newark is in its biggest period of economic growth since the 1950s," he said.

Despite the development and philanthropic money, Newark's unemployment rate stands at about 15 percent and the city continues to rely on the state to help balance the budget. The city council did not pass the 2012 budget until October. The state lent Newark $32 million last year, and it ended up with an $18 million surplus. So this year, Christie slashed the aid by $22 million, chiding the administration for how it handled the budget.

Booker has 1.3 million Twitter followers and is known for responding to constituent complaints sent to him electronically. During Superstorm Sandy, he invited residents to charge their cellphones at his house. In April, he let the world know through Twitter that he rushed into his neighbor's house and rescued her from a fire. And during a snowstorm, he helped shovel people out.

He was elected mayor of Newark in 2006 with 72 percent of the vote, four years after narrowly losing a bruising battle against longtime Mayor Sharpe James. The race was chronicled in the 2005 documentary "Street Fight." He was re-elected in 2010 with about 60 percent of the vote

A Stanford-educated Rhodes Scholar who grew up in suburban Harrington Park, N.J., Booker is the son of civil rights activists who were among the first black executives at IBM. He got his law degree from Yale Law School, then moved to one of Newark's most notoriously violent housing projects.

US economy grew at 3.1 percent in summer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of 3.1 percent over the summer as exports increased, consumers spent more and state and local governments added to growth for the first time in three years. But the economy is likely slowing in the current quarter.

The Commerce Department's third and final estimate Thursday of growth for the July-September quarter was revised up from its previous estimate of a 2.7 percent annual growth rate.

Growth in the third quarter was more than twice the 1.3 percent growth rate in the April-June quarter. But disruptions from Superstorm Sandy and uncertainty weighing on consumers and businesses from the "fiscal cliff" are likely holding back growth in the October-December quarter. Many analysts predict an annual growth rate of just 1.5 percent for this quarter.

Robert Kavcic, an economist at BMO Capital Markets, said the upward revision to third-quarter growth didn't change his view that the economy is slowing in the current quarter to an annual growth rate below 2 percent. Kavcic said a temporary jump in defense spending and business stockpiling in the July-September period is likely being reversed this quarter.

And many economists aren't expecting much improvement in the January-March quarter. The latest forecast from 48 economists for the National Association of Business Economics is for an annual growth rate of just 1.8 percent in the first quarter of 2013. Growth at that level is considered too weak to significantly lower the unemployment rate, which was 7.7 percent in November.

But if Congress and the White House reach agreement to avoid the fiscal cliff, growth could accelerate next year, many economists, including Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, have said. The Fed last week said it plans to keep a key interest rate at a record low as long as unemployment remains above 6.5 percent. And it forecast that unemployment would stay that high until late 2015.

The government's final estimate of a 3.1 percent growth rate for gross domestic product last quarter is a sharp improvement over its initial estimate of a 2 percent rate ? a figure that it later revised up to 2.7 percent based on a buildup in business stockpiles.

GDP measures the nation's total output of goods and services ? from restaurant meals and haircuts to airplanes and appliances.

The further upward revision this month reflected stronger consumer spending, which accounts for about 70 percent of economic activity. The government said consumer spending grew at an annual rate of 1.6 percent in the third quarter, above its previous estimate of 1.4 percent.

The Commerce Department also revised up its estimate of spending by state and local governments to show a gain of 0.3 percent ? the first quarterly increase in three years. State and local governments had previously been slashing payrolls and other spending in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Total government spending grew at 3.9 percent annual rate last quarter, reflecting a surge in defense spending.

The economy also got a boost in the third quarter from trade: Exports grew at a faster pace than previously estimated.

The NABE forecasting panel has said it expects GDP to grow 2.1 percent in 2013, little changed from expected 2.2 percent expansion this year. That would continue the tepid growth that has persisted since the official end of the recession in mid-2009.

But the NABE panel said it thinks growth will accelerate later in the year as long as Congress and the administration resolve their debate over taxes and government spending. Doing so would remove the uncertainty that, in part, is holding back spending, many economists say.

(AP) ? With reverential words and warm memories, President Barack Obama on Friday led the admirers paying tribute to the late Sen. Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, a war hero and senator for 50 years who was hailed for his leadership and modesty. Obama said Inouye was the one who "hinted to me what might be possible in my own life."

"For him freedom and dignity were not abstractions," Obama said at the National Cathedral Service. "They were values that he had bled for."

Inouye died Monday of respiratory complications. He was 88.

The tributes from the nation's political leaders were deeply personal. Vice President Joe Biden said he remembered thinking of Inouye: "I wish I could be more like that man. He's a better man than I am."

Former President Bill Clinton described Inouye as "one of the most remarkable Americans I have ever known."

Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress and the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history. He was awarded a Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military honor, for bravery during World War II, including a heroic effort that cost him his right arm.

"They blew his arm off in World War II, but they never, never laid a finger on his heart or his mind," Clinton said.

Inouye became one of the nation's most influential politicians, playing key roles in congressional investigations of the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals.

Obama told a story of taking a summer trip across America as an 11-year boy and spending the nights watching the Watergate hearings on TV with his mother. The president said that as the son of white mother and a black father, he found it captivating to watch Inouye.

"To see this man, this senator, this powerful, accomplished person who was not out of central casting ... and the way he commanded the respect of an entire nation, it hinted to me what might be possible in my own life," Obama said.

Hawaiian music played during the service, reflecting Inouye's love for his home state. Inouye was Hawaii's first congressman.

One speaker after another described Inouye as a political giant with refreshing humility.

Obama said that Inouye ultimately decided he had done OK in representing his state and his nation the best he could.

"Danny, you were more than OK," Obama said. "You were extraordinary."

As a legislator, his specialty was steering federal money back home to help build the kinds of roads, schools and housing that Americans on the mainland took for granted.

On Thursday, colleagues and aides lined the Capitol rotunda five deep to say farewell.

The rare ceremony demonstrated the respect and good will he generated over the years. Only 31 have lain in the Capitol rotunda; the last was former President Gerald R. Ford nearly six years ago.

Inouye's body will be returned to Hawaii on Saturday.

Jingle Bells, your dog's swell?but how do we keep them safe???

Those are the lyrics, right???? LOLz!

Following these tips from Camp Bow Wow (below) will keep your pet safe while traveling this holiday season!

Being prepared for travel is key.

Check all airline requirements before boarding a plane. See if your pet can travel in a carrier that can be kept under a seat in the cabin or if your pet must travel by freight. Don't try to sneak your pet onboard either, it can cause trouble later down the road.

Familiarize your pet with its carrier. Pets like familiarity. If you plan on keeping your pet inside a carrier while traveling, allow your pet to get used to the environment by placing him or her in the carrier for a few minutes each day. Gradually lengthen the time until your pet seems at ease with being confined in this space.

Make sure your pet stays comfortable with blankets and anything he or she needs through the flight. Also, feed them no less than five to six hours before takeoff.

Have fun and stay safe while traveling!

TuneSpring Offers New Workflow For Ad Music : SonicScoop ...

As music licensing has become a bread-and-butter revenue stream for so many recording artists, songwriters and composers, a number of licensing companies have emerged in recent years, promising to help rights holders sell their music.

The spectrum of services and solutions ranges from turnkey publishing companies to highly personalized licensing companies like Bank Robber and Zync Music to stock music clearinghouses like Getty?s Pump Audio ? and many others (i.e. Jingle Punks, Rumblefish, etc.) in between. But it?s still rare to find a solution that addresses music buyers and sellers like the newly minted TuneSpring.

NYC- and London-based composer Paul Riggio developed TuneSpring specifically ? to start ? for the advertising industry. As owner and composer of his own ad music house, Riggio is himself the user he saw as TuneSpring?s initial customer. Well, at least one of them.

In a sea of licensing engines, Riggio distinguishes that for music sellers like him, TuneSpring is ?the only place that offers an integrated, brandable search and management tool, as well as promotion and marketing through an aggregate website?. But TuneSpring was developed as much with music buyers as sellers in mind ? to ease the process of sourcing music for media projects.

A Brief History

Riggio created So Loud Music in 2005 after working as a staff composer at ad-music-stalwart Big Foote.?With his own company, he planned to work nimbly on a wide range of projects including cutting-edge advertising, indie films, new and still-experimental media, and even the occasional record. He hired a staff composer and signed a handful of others to write for demos and to represent for licensing opportunities. He pitched and won new business.

Paul Riggio

But in the time he was establishing So Loud, budgets began to drop across the board ? by 2008, some agencies seemed to have half the budget for original music than they?d had for similar projects the previous year.[1]

Exclusive and non-exclusive licensing deals began to eclipse publishing buyouts as the typical transaction for original music, scored to picture ? never mind the widespread (and growing) method of licensing tracks directly from artists.?These new ?norms? were transforming the business.?And flexible (lower overhead) music houses like So Loud were embracing that change ? offering licensing options on their custom music.

To streamline the music production and pitching process at So Loud, Riggio had developed an internal music library of his and his composers? catalogs. This way, So Loud could quickly do ?a pull? when a request came in ? i.e. sounds like Feist but with beats, like Ke$ha. In the process, he developed the core concept that would later spin off into TuneSpring.

It wasn?t that what he?d created internally was particularly unique ? many music houses had invested in public-facing libraries by that point, and implemented tools like WireDrive to create dynamic presentations of their music against the clients? video. But as Creative Director of a small music house dealing with big agencies like BBDO, Ogilvy, McgarryBowen and McCann, Riggio experienced time and again a music-to-picture process he refers to as ?complicated and annoying? and only saw cost-prohibitive solutions.

A Library of Libraries

?Imagine a place where buying and selling music for Internet, TV or film use is simple? Making it as easy to find/license that perfect music track as it is to market and sell.?

TuneSpring is a search engine for music buyers and a web application for music sellers. It is both a searchable aggregated music library ? located at Tunespring.com ? and a customizable search engine, presentation and sales tool for composers, music houses and publishers? own catalogs.

At the moment, Tunespring.com features nearly 18,000 tracks, including catalogs owned by respected music houses such as Elias Arts, Tone Farmer and Propeller Music, licensing agencies like ARMM, INGroovesFontana and Number 7 Records, and award-winning composers such as Jamie Lawrence and Duke Bojadziev. Meanwhile, TuneSpring ? the web application ? serves as a user?s entire workflow for sourcing or selling music?stopping short of the sale itself.

TuneSpring GUI: Aggregate Search Results

To his target advertising audience, Riggio explains: ?Right now, the process is such that you would have to make so many calls to so many different music entities to get the same results that you get on TuneSpring. And you?d have to know which entities to call. And how many resources can you possibly know, let alone contact??

An aggregated ?library of libraries?, TuneSpring allows users to cast a wider net searching for that perfect track.

?The concept of one company having every answer, musically and creatively ? it?s something everyone strives for but, ultimately, it?s not possible,? Riggio continues. ?Music companies have different niches, different personalities, and different ideas about what the ?right music? is. That personality, like any personality, will not be for every single person, and will not work on every single project.?

So that the TuneSpring search doesn?t become just as daunting as an analog search, Riggio has implemented parameters for music buyers, including the ability to flag favorites or ?hide? certain libraries. This way, like in life, you can curate a short-list as you go, but also be more inclusive of a wider world of options.

And presumably that wider world will be worth your time. The cost of TuneSpring is just enough of a barrier to provide some quality control, but also prove cost-effective when compared with the alternative ? proprietary web development plus higher-cost tools like WireDrive.

Both music buyers and sellers pay to use TuneSpring ? plans scale by storage size and number of users and ?projects?, and start at $19.99/month. But TuneSpring takes no percentage of the music sale. In fact, that?s where the process goes offline. In advertising, producers will most likely need some level of customization done to the track, they may ask for sound design, and then the inevitable revisions. That whole process happens after you?ve made the connection on TuneSpring ? the client has found the tracks based on their criteria (licensing availability, customizability, budget, etc.) and the music seller keeps 100 percent of the sale.

Meanwhile, every user gets a customizable version of TuneSpring that can be branded and embedded into their own websites ? serving as their company?s library, organizational backend (projects, video elements, track license expirations, metadata) and presentation tool.

And it?s this last functionality that, for many, will be the product?s killer app.

It?s All In The Presentation

TuneSpring can be the turnkey management tool for a music company?s entire pre-negotiation workflow. To demo for an advertising gig, they?ll need to first pitch music they?ve created or selected to fit the creative brief, then synch a shorter list to the client?s rough cut, or wireframes. This process can be very time consuming (and costly), considering they haven?t won the job yet.

?Typically when you send a presentation to a client to review, each track requires its own QuickTime video,? Riggio explains. ?So if you?re sending 20 pieces of music, you?re sending 20 QuickTimes for the client to review. This takes a long time to put together, and the logistics of all that can actually de-emphasize the music in the process.?

View of a custom presentation in TuneSpring

With TuneSpring?s ?P-Layback Video Synch? tool, users can create a presentation with one video and a track playlist that allows their clients to easily demo different tracks against their picture.

?What?s particularly unique is that the synch starts during?the actual search process? every time a track is played, video plays at the same time, while you browse music,? says Riggio.??Then, you add the tracks you like to your playlist, and share with clients in synch with your video.

?It?s really easy to focus on the music because the synching process is streamlined. So you get this feel for the picture, and you?re also able to see which tracks you like and make decisions about what you like.?

Similarly on the client side, a producer or creative director can create a ?project? to share with their colleagues, uploading video and then selecting a number of tracks to synch. They don?t have to actually start the process of reaching out to a music house until they?ve established that a track works well with the picture.

?You can guess how that piece of music feels, and that?s typically what everybody has to do, but it?s not until they download the track and put it up against picture that they really understand how it feels as part of their project,? Riggio describes.

?This is a tool that I think will really make the lives of music supervisors and music producers much easier and a tool that can empower art directors and creative directors and regular directors ? anyone who needs music ? bringing all of these great music resources into the same environment, and letting you synch to picture as you search.?

Piers Morgan To Gun Advocate Larry Pratt: 'You're An Unbelievably Stupid Man, Aren't You?' (VIDEO)

Piers Morgan's interview with gun advocate Larry Pratt on Tuesday reached a boiling point when the CNN host said to his guest, ?You?re an unbelievably stupid man, aren?t you??

Morgan, a longtime advocate of new gun laws, has spoken out strongly in favor of gun control since the Newtown shooting on Friday. Twenty-seven victims, including twenty schoolchildren, were shot and killed in the horrific tragedy.

Morgan hosted Pratt on Tuesday. Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America argued that schools would be safer with more guns.

Morgan pointed to what he said was the country's "enormous problem" with gun violence. The United States, he said, has "the worst rate of gun murder and gun crime of any of the civil countries in this world."

The two engaged in heated cross talk. Pratt went on to argue that gun laws promoted violence because people are unable to defend themselves, and said that gun bans in other countries have not affected violent crime rates.

Morgan said that was not true, and could not hold himself back. ?You?re an unbelievably stupid man, aren?t you?? he said.

?It seems to me you are morally obtuse,? Pratt calmly responded. ?You seem to prefer being a victim to being able to prevail over the criminal element. I don?t know why you want to be the criminal?s friend.?

?What a ridiculous argument," Morgan shot back. "You have absolutely no coherent argument. You don?t actually give a damn about the gun murder rate in America.?
