UFC on FOX 4, Roy Nelson, Chris Weidman: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.30.12

It's fight week, that precious time in the news cycle?when the public relations drones at the UFC and FOX do their best to spawn storylines that will rope in viewers while media members of various degrees of accumen regurgitate or attempt spins?on what they perceive the real stories to be.? Yes, it's a kind of dance, but the music is lovely, and at the end of?it everyone gets to keep a goody bag of memories, plus whatever silverware they can steal.??With UFC on FOX 4 slated for Saturday, the?week will be spent dwelling on all things related to said show, and is that such a bad thing?? We're going to get to see?some perennial favorites in action,?so I'd say no, it's not bad at all.? Just be prepared to see at least one item about UFC on FOX 4 every day.? I'm certainly prepared.

  • A one-hour special called "UFC's Road to the Octagon", which hypes the UFC on FOX 4 main card,?began airing yesterday on FOX.? It will be shown again (and again, and again) on?the different FOX-owned networks between now and Saturday night, but since such factors as where you live and whether you have cable, satellite dish or a coat hanger antenna on your TV make it impossible for me to tell you specifically when you can watch it, I'll just say check your local listings.? ?

?

  • Roy Nelson, who won "The Ultimate Fighter - Season 10" (the season with Kimbo Slice) and has been struggling to find a place in the UFC's heavyweight division ever since, has been tapped to coach the upcoming sixteenth season of the beloved (heh-heh) reality TV show opposite Shane Carwin.? Nelson's also begun his campaign of irreverent hype by releasing?the names of people the UFC has forbidden him from using as coaches on the show.? As usual, MMAFighting ace reporter Ariel Helwani has the sweetness: ??

Former Strikeforce fighter turned Bellator and TNA Wrestling star Muhammed Lawal, pro wrestling legend Kurt Angle and Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO Laboratories, are "non-UFC allowed," according to Nelson.? Nelson's manager Mike Kogan confirmed to MMAFighting.com that the UFC will not allow the trio to appear on the show.

?

  • Chris Weidman is riding high off his dominant destruction of the usually deadly Mark Munoz, so why not capitalize on that momentum by hounding UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva for a shot at the belt?? Actually, when Silva's manager Jorge Guimaraes calls you an "amateur", I guess you're not really hounding, you're just defending yourself.? Am I right?? Anyway, here's Weidman defending himself, courtesy of MMAWeekly:

"I read them and it's kind of crazy.? The managers they have no right to start putting down professional athletes.? He put me, and (Alan) Belcher, and (Tim) Boetsch down and he's trying to draw attention away from the fact that I'm the No. 1 contender, and then called us amateurs, and we're all top ten fighters," Weidman told MMAWeekly.com when reached for comment.

?

Yeah, tell 'em, Chris.

That's all for now.

Seeking Debt Advice

Debt has become a major problem for many consumers in the UK. The problem can seem insurmountable especially when you are being hounded by calls and letters from creditors demanding that you make payment or face legal action. CCJs and defaults are extremely damaging to your credit history and they also usually incur extra costs that you will need to meet. If you are in this kind of position you should seek debt advice sooner rather than later to help combat the problem.
?
An initial debt advice consultation will consider your personal circumstances to create a debt management plan. There are certain costs that can't be covered by a debt management plan but must be paid every month in order to avoid further financial difficulties or court action. A good management plan will take these into consideration when creating your debt management arrangement.
?
As part of a debt advice meeting you will also be asked about any money which you may be owed.

Reclaiming this money and using it to repay debts is one of the most effective ways to help reduce debt and become debt free. Unfair credit card charges and bank charges, as well as mis-sold PPI payments could be owed to you and a debt advice company will be able to advise on these instances and determine whether you are owed any money which could be used to reduce debt on your behalf.
?
Your debt advice program will work with you to create a debt repayment plan. They will contact your creditors to agree to a settlement plan and as you agree to make a single monthly repayment, it is the debt advice company that will be responsible for making payments to the companies that you owe money to.
?
When you're in debt and being hounded by creditors' phone calls and letters, often packed with threats of legal action, one of the biggest concerns is how you will make the repayments and become debt free in the future. With sound debt advice you will be given a date where you will become debt free and this can release a major burden on you and even your family.

Hamilton is hearing the boo birds

After being criticized by Rangers president and CEO Nolan Ryan earlier this week, Josh Hamilton is now hearing it from some of his home fans.

Hamilton went 0-for-4 in last night?s 9-5 loss to the White Sox. While he at least contributed with a sacrifice fly and an RBI ground out, a smattering of boos could be heard after he struck out in the third and fifth innings.

According to Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Hamilton wasn?t happy about being booed in his home ballpark, but acknowledged that it comes with the territory.

?Yeah, I noticed but it?s all about what have you done for me lately, no matter who you are,? Hamilton said. ?That?s what it is. There are more fans that are still cheering and encouraging me than the ones that are?booing.

?I pray for the ones that are [booing] and I appreciate the?support of the other ones.?

Hamilton, who has fought addiction his entire career, has heard plenty from fans across the country. But what did he make of the hometown crowd booing him?

?It?s disappointing,? he said.

Hamilton paused and repeated: ?It?s disappointing. It is.?I?ll leave it at that.?

Hamilton is currently tied with Miguel Cabrera for the American League lead with 83 RBI, but his slump has lingered for nearly two months. The impending free agent is hitting just .190 with seven homers and a 56/18 K/BB ratio in 186 plate appearances since the start of June, which has seen his batting average tumble from .368 to .284 overall.

Viewers Shun Moroccan Channels in Ramadan, Minister of ...

By Loubna Flah

Morocco World News

Casablanca, July 28, 2012

The minister of communication and the government spokesperson, Mr. Al Khalfi declared that he is dissatisfied with the quality of TV programs broadcast on national channels during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Moroccan daily Attajdid reports that Mr. AL Khalf intends to summon the members of the house of counselors in order to debate the issue. He adds that the TV programs being broadcast this year, have been produced under the former specifications.

In answer to a question addressed to him during the questions sessions in the house of counselors, Mr. AL Khalfi admitted that a large segment of Moroccan viewers remain disssatisfied with these TV programs.

The minister of communication was also asked about the status of the Amazigh language in the Moroccan audio visual media. He retorted that the committee in charge of setting the public specifications for public media will soon submit its work to the government, then to the legislative institutions.

He went on to say that the Amazigh language remains one of the government?s priorities and that the government is setting the terms of the organic law related to the representation of the Amazigh language in public media.

The government council was under pressure to extend last May the validity of the former specifications addressing the two main public audio visual institutions until the new ones are finalized and published.

It is noteworthy that the latest specifications presented by the ministry of communication regarding TV programming stirred a heated debate among media stakeholders. Consequently, the government has subjected these specifications to new amendments.

The proponents of francophone culture in Morocco had leveled sharp criticism following the proposal to limit broadcasts in foreign languages to 20 % of the total number of TV programs. Leftist political parties perceived the intrusion of the state in media matters as a threat to freedom of expression.

A survey administered by Maroc ?Metrie, a Moroccan company that conducts audience measurement regarding the Moroccan TV channels viewership, revealed that till the third day in Ramadan 50,5 % of Moroccan viewers watch foreign channels, 36,7% watch the Moroccan TV channel 2M , 8% pay interest to the first Moroccan channel and only 3,9 watch Al Maghrebia.

In tracking the appeal of national TV channels, the survey revealed that 2M is the most watched channel with a 56, 1% rating at peak times, after the Maghreb Azaan (call for prayer) when Moroccans usually sit with their families to break the fast.

Heart CT Scans May Help Emergency Room Personnel More ...

Bethesda, Maryland--(ENEWSPF)--July 26, 2012. ?Adding computed tomography (CT) scans to standard screening procedures may help emergency room staff more rapidly determine which patients complaining of chest pain are having a heart attack or may soon have a heart attack, and which patients can be safely discharged, according to a study funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health.

Researchers in the study focused on a condition known as acute coronary syndrome, which includes heart attacks and unstable angina (chest pain), a condition that often progresses to a heart attack. This syndrome occurs when narrowed or blocked coronary arteries prevent oxygen-rich blood from reaching the heart muscle. Since chest pain has many causes, patients are often unnecessarily admitted to the hospital before it is determined that their chest pain is not due to acute coronary syndrome or other serious conditions.

CT angiography is a type of heart X-ray exam using a device that creates pictures of the coronary arteries, allowing physicians to see whether arteries have major blockages.

?Quickly distinguishing emergency room patients who are experiencing acute coronary syndrome from patients with pain of non-cardiac origin is a significant challenge for U.S. hospitals,? said Susan B. Shurin, M.D., acting director of the NHLBI. "This study provides important information to inform decisions about allocation of resources in our health care system."

The study results suggest that CT scans allow hospitals to send many patients with chest pain home sooner without compromising their safety. The average length of hospital stay was 23.2 hours for those who underwent CT scans, compared to 30.7 hours for those who underwent standard screening procedures alone. Half of the patients who received a CT scan were discharged in 8.6 hours or less. In contrast, half of the patients in the standard evaluation group were sent home in 26.7 hours or less.

Even with shorter hospital stays in the group that received CT scans, the researchers did not miss any cases of acute coronary syndrome among those participants. After 28 days of follow-up, there was no significant difference in serious cardiovascular events between the two groups.

The study, which appears in the July 26 New England Journal of Medicine, was part of an NHLBI-funded program called Rule Out Myocardial Infarction/Ischemia Using Computer-Assisted Tomography (ROMICAT-II).

Led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, the researchers randomized participants with suspected acute coronary syndrome to receive standard emergency room screening evaluations alone or to standard evaluations plus cardiac CT angiography.

The researchers studied 1,000 participants between 40 and 74 years old in nine U.S. hospitals. Participants were eligible to enroll in the trial if they showed symptoms suggestive of acute coronary syndrome but no prior history of heart disease or evidence of heart damage on their electrocardiogram (ECG) tests or blood tests.

"The results from this study should help health care providers and patients make better informed decisions by knowing the risks and potential benefits of using CT scans to more quickly diagnose acute coronary syndrome," said Udo Hoffmann, M.D., M.P.H., the study's principal investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston. "It can be a relief to patients with chest pain to quickly know they are not having a heart attack and that they can spend the night at home, instead of in a hospital bed."

Participants in the CT group were exposed to more radiation than those in the standard screening group, though the study authors suggested that future CT scans could be done using less radiation, which could help lower exposure without sacrificing accuracy.

Overall costs were similar in the two treatment groups.

The NHLBI funded ROMICAT-II through the following grants: HL092040, HL092022, HL098370, and HL093896. Learn more about this clinical trial (NCT01084239) at: http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01084239

Birds, young children show similar solving abilities for 'Aesop's fable' riddle: At about 8 years old, children's performance changes

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? Birds in the crow family can figure out how to extract a treat from a half-empty glass surprisingly well, and young children show similar patterns of behavior until they reach about eight years old, at which point their performance surpasses that of the birds. The full report is published July 25 in the open access journal PLoS ONE.

In the current study, led by Nicola Clayton of the University of Cambridge, researchers used a version of the riddle commonly referred to as "Aesop's fable" to test associative learning and problem-solving ability. In previous work, the researchers presented the birds with a partially filled glass of water, with a worm floating just out of reach. The birds were also offered different tools, like rocks or Styrofoam blocks, and were able to figure out which items, when dropped into the glass, would cause the water level to rise so that they could reach the treat.

In the current paper, the researchers tested the ability of children between the ages of four and ten on a similar task: retrieving a floating token in a number of different scenarios. The researchers found that children between the ages of five and seven performed consistently with the birds; both learned how to accomplish the task after about 5 trials. Children eight years and older succeeded in all tasks on their first try.

According to Lucy Cheke, first author of the publication, the main purpose of the study was to see whether birds and children learn in the same way. She says that, based on the results, it seems they don't: the birds were unable to learn when something apparently impossible happened, while children were able to learn about what was happening even if they had no idea how it was happening. "It is children's job to learn about the world," Cheke says, "and they can't do that when they are limited by a preconceived idea about what is or is not possible. For a child, if it works, it works."

Jane White: What is the Future of U.S. Jobs? Could We Latte-Sipping Liberals Care Less?

Nobody loves Apple products more than I do. I've got an iMac, MacBook, iPad, iPhone and four iPod shuffles. But as a progressive who is concerned about the job security of Americans I hate the fact that Apple chose to offshore the assembly of its products to China and plan to boycott them until they "reshore" their products to the United States.

According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, most of the 70 million iPhones, 30 million iPads and 59 million other products Apple sold in 2011 were made overseas. That year it earned more than $400,000 in profit per employee, more than Goldman Sachs, Exxon Mobil or Google. Frankly that's obscene. Apple used to make its stuff here but by 2004 it turned to foreign manufacturing. Guess whose idea that was -- Timothy Cook, the guy who replaced Steve Jobs as CEO.

Apparently Google thinks American workers do have the chops to assemble its products in the United States since on the underside of its Nexus Q tablet is a simple description: "Designed and Manufactured in the U.S.A." Unfortunately, when a New York Times reporter asked Andy Rubin, the Google executive who leads the company's Android mobile business, where the factory is located in Silicon Valley, for some reason he wouldn't disclose it publicly and the company reportedly isn't saying much about the source of many of its parts in the U.S. (Spokespeople for Apple and Google didn't respond to my requests for comment.)

Some experts are optimistic about the return of factory jobs because of rising Chinese wages -- University of Southern California economist Baizhu Chen says they've risen a whopping 14 percent a year during the past decade -- along with a declining dollar and skyrocketing oil prices that have driven up shipping costs by about 71 percent. Manufacturing wages in China's big hubs are $3.40 to $3.50 per hour, compared to about $1 an hour just a few years ago.

But are the wages being paid for the U.S. factory jobs truly middle class? When GE moved its assembly of water heaters from Chinese contractors to its factory in Louisville, wages at the new plant were $13 an hour and assembly workers at Whirlpool's Ohio plant typically earn $12.40 to $16.50 per hour -- a huge pay cut from the $32 an hour that used to be typical for U.S. workers, which is STILL way lower than the typical $48 an hour wage in Germany.

Not only is the U.S. minimum wage worth less now -- adjusted for inflation -- than it was 44 years ago in 1968, but the median wage actually declined in three calendar years since 2001, the first time since 1967 that has happened. Bill Clinton's move in 2000 to permit China's entry into the World Trade Organization is a huge driver of these wage drops.

In the not-so-old days U.S. companies valued their workers over their shareholders and compensated them well -- the ratio of CEO-to-worker pay in the S&P 500 was 42 to one in 1980 compared to 380 to one in 2011, according to "The CEO File," in the June 2012 issue of Reuters Magazine. This is the highest ratio in the world; the CEO/worker ratio in France is 23 to one, 20 to one in Germany and 26 to one in Italy.

As United Steelworkers president and fellow blogger Leo W. Gerard told me, this country "needs to make things that create real wealth. We need workforce training and development. In 10 years we've gone from a trade deficit that's under $20 billion that's now $2 trillion." Huffpost has launched a great new jobs section: Opportunity: What is Working, that will tackle the challenges of accelerating job creation and filling current job openings.

The other thing that white collar liberals should wake up to is those of us with lousy benefits such as a lack of a pension -- which is most of us -- are better off when unionized blue collar workers negotiate adequate pensions that trickle up to the "salaried" employees.

As former SEIU President Andy Stern pointed out in his book, A Country That Works, too many white-collar Democrats who run companies that pay low wages are fighting unions that want to negotiate decent wages. He described a fundraiser for President Clinton that was hosted by a "powerful and wealthy Boston couple who owned a nursing home that SEIU had spent years trying to organize. The owner had been quoted in Boston Magazine as saying, `Unions have no place, in my opinion, in the heath care industry.' Quite a point of view for the host of an important Democratic Party event."

Bottom line: True Blue Democrats have got to switch their loyalties to the working class from the One Percent.

Protein Refolds To Perform Second Job

The transcription factor RfaH unfolds and then refolds into a new conformation to become a translation factor. Ian Chant reports.

Secret identities aren?t just for superheroes anymore. Researchers have found that a protein present in everything from amoebas to people is living a double life. Once it binds to DNA, the protein, called RfaH, rips apart?and then refolds into a different shape, to do a different job.

RfaH is a transcription protein?attached to or freed from a stretch of DNA, it determines if a gene is expressed or not. But once the protein has carried out its task, its helical structure unravels. Within seconds, it refolds into a barrel structure, which has a new role, this time in translation, where it helps the cell produce amino acids for new proteins. The study is in the journal Cell. [Bj?rn M. Burmann et al, An ? Helix to ? Barrel Domain Switch Transforms the Transcription Factor RfaH into a Translation Factor]

The next step is to find out if the barrel can refold into the helix. After that, researchers want to see if proteins similar to RfaH?which are present in all life on Earth?are capable of comparable molecular contortion. Which would mean a lot more bang for our protein buck.

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert extend Comedy Central contracts

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Fear not fake news fans, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will be sticking around after the upcoming presidential elections to lampoon pandering politicians and cable news bloviators.

Both men signed two-year contract extensions that will keep them in Comedy Central's late-night roster, the network said Wednesday.

Stewart's new contract will have him behind the desk at "The Daily Show" through 2015. He will remain as the show's executive producer, writer and host.

Colbert's extension will keep him, his pompous on-air alter ego and "The Colbert Report" at Comedy Central through the end of 2014. Colbert serves as executive producer, writer and host for "The Report."

Each program recently racked up four Emmy nominations and consistently performs well in the key advertising demographic of adults between the ages of 18 to 49.

The social network told The Wall Street Journal it would receive no money from NBC, but it has sold ads on its Olympics site to GE, Procter and Gamble and other advertisers.

Twitter claims around 140 million users, but a study quoted by the Journal says it will generate just $US260 million revenue this year compared to Facebook's $US311 milllion for 2011.

Twitter's Olympics website will go live wiht the opening ceremony in London, Friday night UK time (Saturday 8am NZ time).

New Green Hills Restaurants: Kohana and Alegria Mexican |

I have been meaning to share the news of two new restaurants in Green Hills that are within the same development as our offices. With the busy summer selling season, I haven?t had time to put pen to paper but I found the review below on NashvilleScene.com and had to share!

Alegria opened last week and I enjoyed my?first of, I?m sure, many lunches there yesterday. ?The atmosphere has a?cool, relaxing vibe, the service was great and my food was tasty! ?I recommend the chicken enchiladas.

The redeveloping retail strip along Richard Jones Road in Green Hills has a new restaurant anchor.?Kohana Japanese Restaurant?opened two weeks ago at 2002 Richard Jones.

Kohana is owned by local restaurateur Doris Cheung; it?s the sister restaurant to Kohana locations in Clarksville and the Streets of Indian Lake in Hendersonville. It?s a real family business; employees include Doris? sister Bobo and father Raymond, a sushi chef.

The menu features many of the standards of Japanese cuisine in America: teriyaki, tempura, noodles and katsu. But the Kohana folks are especially proud of their sushi lineup: 70 different sushi rolls, and if that?s not enough variety, diners can customize their own.

Kohana is working to secure a liquor license, but until then you can bring your own bottle of wine with no corking fee.

Closed Mondays, Kohana serves lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday (the restaurant closes for a couple hours between lunch and dinner Tuesday through Friday). The phone number is 915-2415.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the same strip on Richard Jones,?Alegria Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar?is poised to open in the next week or two. The owner is restaurateur Georges Haddad.

Describing its food as ?modern Mexican? cuisine, Alegria has posted some impressive interior shots on Facebook, with bright, splashy colors, cozy booths and chic chandeliers. We hear Alegria will seat 200 diners, with 60 more spots out on the margarita-friendly patio. There?s also a private party room.

Alegria promises an extensive tequila menu. They are also currently taking draft-beer suggestions on Facebook.

Auto-centric Green Hills diners will be happy to know there?s a 400-car garage behind the restaurant.

For updates, follow Alegria Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar on Facebook, or @TasteOfAlegria on Twitter.

Syria fighting gives neither side decisive edge

BEIRUT (Reuters) - A Syrian army tank rumbles past the entrance to a narrow city street, wreathed in oily black smoke apparently the result of a rocket-propelled grenade strike. A soldier leaps from the turret to escape the inferno.

Video footage posted by rebel fighters shows them exulting in this local victory. The images also illustrate the difficulty the army faces as it counter-attacks to drive insurgent fighters from central districts of the capital, Damascus.

While the army has an overwhelming advantage in fire-power, streets so narrow that tanks cannot bring their guns to bear on the enemy are not an ideal battleground on which to face an agile and opportunistic guerrilla force.

For their part, the rebels are able to embarrass the army in these street battles, but they are not well enough armed or commanded to capitalize on their gains. If the rebels can knock out tanks in Damascus, the army has thousands more.

The 16-month-old effort to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad reached what many commentators saw as a potential tipping point last week when a bomber infiltrated a meeting of security officials and killed four of Assad's most senior lieutenants.

Forty-eight hours later, the Syrian military began to drive the rebels out of central Damascus, district by district. The operation brought quick successes for the army but revealed strengths and weaknesses on both sides of the struggle.

While the rebels surprised the government with their advance into the capital, taking on troops within sight of the presidential palace, they are armed for the most part only with assault rifles, machineguns and grenade launchers.

BOMB ATTACK

Rebel sources said up to 2,500 fighters from outside Damascus had been infiltrated into the capital for a concerted push, but they have so far failed to capitalize on the bomb attack as their supporters had hoped.

As the assault by the army's 4th Division, commanded by Assad's feared brother Maher, got under way, the rebels fell back, demonstrating that they are unable to hold ground in the face of artillery and helicopter gunships.

At the same time, by withdrawing quickly, often through fields and farmland adjacent to central Damascus, the rebels were able to escape the might of one of the best-equipped armies in the region. The same story emerges in Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, now the scene of bitter fighting.

"Yes, the rebels have retreated," said Brigadier General Fayez Amr, an army defector now on the side of the insurgents. "When you face such artillery and aerial bombardment, and long-range missile attacks, what choice do you have?

"But this will not crush the revolution and this is a war that Assad cannot win. Does the tactical retreat mean he has crushed six million people in Damascus?"

How close the rebels are to dislodging Assad remains unclear, although his position looks shakier than ever.

The president himself has not spoken in public since the bomb attack on his security cabinet.

He has taken a different tack from that adopted by Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, who made defiant speeches almost to the last, or Iraq's Saddam Hussein, who used his information minister, derided in the West as Comical Ali, to issue delusional statements claiming all was well as American troops invaded.

The 46-year-old Assad last month ordered his government to spare no effort to defeat rebels he has described as terrorists.

Recalling his earlier profession as an eye surgeon, he said: "When a surgeon performs an operation to treat a wound do we say to him: 'Your hands are covered in blood'?"

"Or do we thank him for saving the patient?"

Military experts say that with the insurgency on the march, Assad is being forced to concentrate his forces to protect important centers such as Damascus and Aleppo, even if this means losing control of outlying areas and some border posts.

Assad is deploying elite military units, whose loyalty can be relied on, to do most of the fighting. These are mostly Alawite, belonging to the same minority sect as the president, as are the feared shabbiha militiamen who are sent in to mop up resistance after artillery bombardments.

Desertions of dozens of senior military officers are seen as embarrassing but unlikely to make a critical operational difference just yet.

"Assad knows that he ... needs to be able to control main logistical and transport routes between Syria's urban hubs - Damascus, Aleppo, Latakia," said Anthony Skinner, Middle East expert at British political risk consultancy Maplecroft.

"To use the medical analogy, these are the arteries feeding the main organs - the heart and brain. Bashar al-Assad is clearly investing considerable fire-power to protect the centers of command, or main organs."

DIMINISHING GRASP

But with the insurgency growing in strength, Assad is forced to confront the rebels in an increasing number of locations at a time when his grasp is diminishing.

Local rebel commanders report indiscriminate shelling in some areas, but brush this off, saying it costs them few casualties while at the same time ensuring that the government incurs the wrath of people forced to flee their homes.

"It's a scorched earth policy to terrify people and to crush the revolution," said Brigadier Amr.

Mustafa Abdullah, who heads a unit called the Martyrs of Aleppo, told Reuters: "The regime is indiscriminately shelling areas around Aleppo -- Azaz, Tel Rifaat and Anadan -- but God willing we are steadfast."

How steadfast they can remain might be in question, as Abdullah complains that his men are running out of bullets, something that will inevitably hamper their aim of wearing down government forces with hit-and-run attacks.

The rebels also face a backlash from government forces desperate to halt the insurgency in its tracks.

"What we will be witnessing now is the beginning of a stage of even bloodier retaliation by the regime because the two cities they have long seen as their bastions, Damascus and Aleppo, are now at the heart of the battle," said Major Abu Abdul Rahman, a rebel brigade commander from Rastan.

"Assad's elite forces are resorting to escalating force to bring people to submission," he said.

While the rebels are convinced that their campaign will be settled on the streets of Damascus, some analysts speculate that Assad's forces might retreat to their Alawite heartland around the port of Latakia. A breakaway Alawite enclave is not however seen as viable in the long term.

While the fighting has been restricted to conventional weapons, Syria alarmed the West this week when it confirmed it had stocks of chemical weapons.

The government says it will not use these weapons against its own people, only against foreign enemies. Given the level of international disapproval, any use of these weapons would leave Assad even more isolated than he is now.

Colorado mourns victims of 'diabolical' theater gunman

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters

A woman stands during a morning Mass remembering the victims of the movie theater shootings, at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora, Colo., on Sunday.

By Miranda Leitsinger and James Eng, NBC News

Updated at 5:43 p.m. ET: In community churches, at impromptu memorials and at a public vigil, residents of Aurora, Colo., gathered Sunday to mourn the victims of a movie theater mass-shooting that the governor said was the work of a ?diabolical, demonic? individual.

As worshippers pondered how the massacre could have happened, investigators said they don?t know what prompted a gunman police identified as a graduate-school dropout to open fire during a packed midnight premiere of the latest ?Batman? film, ?The Dark Knight Rises.? The massacre left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

President Barack Obama arrived in Colorado late Sunday afternoon to meet privately with families of the victims and with state and local officials.?It is Obama's second trip in less than a month to comfort Colorado residents. In late June he visited Colorado Springs, where hundreds of homes were destroyed in the most devastating wildfire in the state's history.

The message from Aurora was clear: On the online homepage of the Aurora Sentinel, the hometown paper, a headline blared: "Welcome back to Aurora, Mr. President. We?re hurting, and we need your help. The whole country does."

A public vigil was scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in front of Aurora City Hall, organized by civic, community and religious leaders.

At New Life Community Church in Aurora, Pastor Jeff Noble said he didn?t have an answer to why God would allow such an attack to happen, though he offered some spiritual guidance to his congregation.

?It?s not only OK but it?s good to express your honest feelings to God and to others about how you?re feeling ? about this situation,? Noble said.

"The reality is as a pastor, I make the comment, you know, to some degree the wounds heal but there's always a scar and there?s always a hole, something that?s missing in their lives,? he added.

On a day of prayer and reflection, Aurora, Colo. comes together after being torn apart by the shooting rampage early Friday morning. NBC's Miguel Almaguer reports.

"Our culture needs to change,'' Fr. Mauricio Bermudez told a packed Mass at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Aurora, Reuters reported. "What kind of people are we becoming? Today, we must change. Today is the day.''

At the Vatican, Pope Benedict XVI said he was??deeply shocked? by the ?senseless violence? in the?Colorado movie theater shootings. In his traditional Sunday blessing, Benedict said he shared the distress of the families and friends of the victims. He said he was praying for all ?as a pledge of consolation and strength? for God.

Shannon Stapleton / Reuters

As many as 12 people were killed and 50 injured at a shooting at the Century 16 movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. early Friday during the showing of the latest Batman movie.

The suspect, identified as James Eagan Holmes, was reportedly jailed in solitary confinement, awaiting his first court appearance on Monday. Police have said Holmes planned the massacre with "calculation and deliberation," arming himself with ammunition delivered to his home and school over a period of months.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said ?there is absolutely no question that this guy acted alone.?

He said Sunday that Holmes has "lawyered up" and is not talking to investigators.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, speaking on NBC?s "Meet the Press" on Sunday, said the motive for the shooting remains a mystery. He described Holmes as "a twisted, really delusional individual" who had not been cooperating with authorities.

"He was diabolical, demonic," Hickenlooper said.

John Hickenlooper visits Meet the Press to update NBC's David Gregory on the most recent information from the tragic shootings in Aurora, Colo.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver, where he was one of six students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money.

The university said it's investigating whether Holmes used his position as a graduate student to order materials in the potentially deadly booby traps that police said they found in his apartment.

Twenty-four shooting victims remained hospitalized on Sunday at area hospitals, nine in critical condition. They included Ashley Moser, whose 6-year-old daughter, Veronica Moser Sullivan, was among those killed. Ashley Moser, who was shot in the back, was told of her daughter?s death on Saturday by her mother, a chaplain and her doctor.

Among the 12 who died early Friday at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. were fathers, mothers, a little girl ? even heroes. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

Authorities said Holmes'?apartment was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby trapped to kill whoever entered it. Bomb?technicians neutralized a makeshift?explosive device and by late Saturday afternoon, all hazards had been removed from Holmes' apartment, police said.

Police said Sunday they have finished collecting evidence from the apartment, but it's not known yet when the building's residents would be allowed to return home. "Security of the building is still being maintained because of chemical hazards from the suspect's apartment," Aurora police said in a statement.

The theater where the shooting happened is expected to remain off-limits for up to a week as police continue to process evidence.

Meanwhile, the owner of a Colorado gun range said?Holmes applied to join the club a few weeks before the shooting but never became a member.

Glenn Rotkovich, of the Lead Valley Range in Byers, said Holmes emailed an application to join on June 25.?Rotkovich followed up by calling Holmes' apartment to invite him to a mandatory orientation the following week.

As detectives pored over evidence from the home of Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes, it became clear how complicated the investigation might be. NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

Rotkovich got Holmes' answering machine and said "it was bizarre -- guttural, freakish at best," The Associated Press reported.

Rotkovich left two other messages but eventually told his staff to watch for Holmes at the July 1 orientation and not to accept him into the club, according to AP.

A?man who said he was the suspect?s uncle described his nephew as a ?nerd? and ?unassuming kid.? The uncle, also named James Holmes, lives in Carmel, Calif. He told KSBW-TV? he was ?shocked and horrified? by the news. He said his nephew never acted out during his childhood and teen years.

A standing-room-only crowd jammed the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Bevery Hills, Calif., on Saturday night for the official Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences screening of ?The Dark Knight Rises." Academy President Tom Sherak asked for a moment of silence for the victims, deadline.com reported.

NBC's Kate Snow, Julmary Zambrano and Brian LePore, The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this story.
