United Arab Emirates v Afghanistan ? Asian Cricket Council Trophy Elite 2012 (Semi-Final) ? Match Update

Having launched a stifling bowling attack led by Shadeep Silva and Ahmed Raza, the United Arab Emirates restricted Afghanistan to a low total, which their batsmen then went on to chase down with ease, claiming a 158-run win in the semi-final of the ongoing Asian Cricket Council Trophy Elite 2012, played at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai, today on October 10.

Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first, but it turned out to be a misguided decision, as the UAE bowlers bowled a series of oppressive spells which left their opponents struggling for runs.

Player of the Match Ahmed Raza claimed 3 wickets and gave away just 6 runs in 5 overs, while Silva also claimed 3 and conceded just 16 runs in 10 overs. Skipper Khurram Khan and Saqib Ali both claimed one wicket each and also maintained excellent economy, with the former giving away 7 runs in 5.4 overs, while the latter conceded just 1 run in one over. Arshad Ali took 2 and bled 22 in 6.

Afghanistan came into the match on the back of four consecutive victories in the tournament, but the team was severely let down by their batting order and unable to maintain their winning streak into the semis.

Karim Sadiq (12) and Javed Ahmadi (who top-scored for the team with 29) remained the only batsmen who managed to contribute double-digit scores ? the remainder of the batting order crumbled in the face of the UAE?s bowling attack. Interestingly, the number 4 appeared to be a cut-off point, and five batsmen ? Asghar Stanikzai, Mohammad Nabi, Samiullah Shenwari, Rahmat Shah, and Gulbodin Naib ? were all dismissed after contributing just 4 runs each.

Skipper Nawroz Mangal managed just one run before Silva took him out of the game, while Shapoor Zadran and Dawlat Zadran were unable to contribute any runs. By the 31st over, Afghanistan found themselves all out at a dismal 70.

Predictably, the chase did not take the UAE long to complete. Openers Abdul Shakoor (0) and Arshad Ali (6) were both dismissed early in the innings, by Shapoor Zadran and Mohammad Nabi. However, the team lost no more wickets after that, and Haroon Iftikhar (34*) followed his 26-run stand with Arshad Ali, with an unbeaten 45-run stand with Shaiman Anwar (22*).

Their combined efforts got the team safely over the finish line, enabling them to reach 71, with 8 wickets and 158 deliveries still remaining, and secure a spot in the tournament final.
