LAKE ELSINORE, California ? Bicyclist Harry Dettloff, 46, of Lake Elsinore was struck and killed Wednesday afternoon by the driver of a pickup truck as Dettloff attempted to cross Grand Avenue just north of Baldwin Avenue, according to a press release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff Coroner?s Department.
Mr. Dettloff was crossing the roadway about 257 feet north of Baldwin about 4:40 p.m., the report said. Emergency workers arriving at the scene of the crash pronounced him dead at 5:08 p.m. Lake Elsinore police are investigating the crash to determine its cause.
?Drivers need to slow down when bicyclists and pedestrians are present on our roadways,? said Attorney West Seegmiller. ?My heart goes out to the family of this man as the cope with such a tremendous?loss.?

According to the California Statewide Integrated Traffic Report,? there were five injury crashes involving bicycles in 2009 in Lake Elsinore. Additionally, five people were killed, 144 injured in all traffic accidents reported in the small tourist destination.
In Riverside County, a total of seven bicyclists were killed and 343 injured in traffic accidents in 2009, but overall crashes accounted for 203 deaths and 7,974 injuries the same year, the report said.
