Save Energy & Money - Mammoth Real Estate

Energy StarThere are many ways to save money around the house. One of the best ways to save money is to become more energy efficient. Below are some helpful tips on how to make your home more energy efficient and how to save some money in the process.

1. Space is important
If you are looking to buy a home in Mammoth Lakes it is important to buy a house or condo that suits your needs. A smaller space will be easier to heat and cool, saving you money. However if you have a large family or plan on having many guests visit a larger home may be necessary. If you are already a home owner with more space than you need there are ways to reduce the amount of space that you are heating & cooling. Closing doors and vents to rooms that are not in use is one very efficient way to cut down on energy waste.

2. Use energy efficient appliances
When shopping for appliances for your home make sure that you purchase Energy Star Appliances. There are many energy efficient Energy Star certified types of appliances including LCD or LED Televisions, Washers and Dryers, Dishwashers, Ovens,Microwaves and Refrigerators. The Refrigerator is very important as it typically makes up about 10 percent of the energy use in a home. Another great way to cut down on energy usage is to unplug appliances while not in use. The toaster, coffee maker and similar appliances can still use energy just by being plugged in. Lamps and other household devices do the same thing, so unplug and save money. If you use your Mammoth Lakes property as a vacation home for your family you will want to make sure that everything is unplugged when you leave town.

3. Use energy efficient lighting
It may seem very small, but when a number of factors add up, your yearly savings add up too. Installing efficient lighting such as florescent or LED light bulbs throughout your home can save you considerable cash. Lighting accounts for over 5% of an average energy bill each year. Cutting down on lighting costs can save you hundreds of dollars. Again remember to unplug lamps and other appliances when not in use.

4. Get an Energy Audit or contact an Energy Conservation Consultant
The power company will often provide this service, if not there are Energy Conservation Consultants that are able to help you find extra savings. They will perform tests on your home and appliances to identify new ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Although it may cost you more up front there are other ways to improve the efficiency of your home such as upgrading your heating, ventilation, & air conditioning system. Another set of upgrades that could help you improve energy efficiency are those that would improve your thermal envelope such as insulation, windows, doors, seals, weather stripping, siding, etc.

5. Capitalize on Tax Credits & Rebates
There are many state and federal credits and rebates for upgrading to energy efficient appliances and home improvements. Visit energy.gov/savings to learn more about the opportunities available for you to earn tax credits, rebates and other savings.
