College basketball: Maroons win season opener - www.roanoke.com

PHILADELPHIA - Kwasi Amponsah had 19 points and Andrew Daniels came off of the bench to score 15 as Roanoke College came back from a nine-point halftime deficit to open the season with an 87-82 win over Swarthmore at Haverford College's tournament Friday.

Daniel Eacho (13), Jordan Thacker (11) and Julian Ramierez (10) also scored in double figures.

With the score tied with 3 minutes to play, Roanoke outscored Swarthmore 10-5 down the stretch.

LOCAL MEN

Towson 75, Radford 67

RICHMOND, Ky. - Marcus Damas had 21 points and Jerrelle Benimon added 19 to lead Towson over the Highlanders at the Comfort Suites Invitational at Eastern Kentucky.

Javonte Green and Ya Ya Anderson had 10 points apiece for Radford, which cut a second-half 18-point deficit to six in the final minute.

Ferrum 85, Bridgewater 72

HARRISONBURG - Jamal Pullen had 26 points and Brian Clarke added 13 points off of the bench to lead the Panthers (1-0) over the Eagles (0-1) at the Eastern Mennonite Tip-Off Classic.

Lamont King added 12 points for Ferrum, which shot 70.8 percent (34-48) from the field and led by as many as 19 points in the second half.

W&L 79, Tufts 68

NEWARK, N.J. - Kevin Gill's 17 points led the Generals (1-0) in the Rutgers-Newark tournament.

Clay McLean added 15 points for W&L, Javon McDonald had 14 and J.D. Ey finished with 10.

Guilford 71, So. Va. 67

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Josh Pittman had 15 points as Guilford outscored the Knights (0-1) 11-3 in the last 3:08.

Jonathan Jacobson and Isaac Jacobson had 20 points and six rebounds apiece for SVU.

No. 6 N.C. State 94, UMass 76

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - T.J. Warren had 21 points to lead North Carolina State to a win at the Puerto Rico Tipoff.

Richard Howell added 19 points and nine rebounds and Lorenzo Brown had 11 points and 10 assists for the Wolfpack (3-0), who shot 8 for 18 from 3-point range.

No. 23 UConn 77, Wake Forest 71

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands - Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatright each scored 16 points to lead UConn (3-0) in the Paradise Jam.

Wake Forest (1-1) would get to within four (73-69) on a Travis McKie 3-pointer with 53 seconds left. But Napier knocked down four free throws over the final 28 seconds to clinch the win.

Florida St. 88, BYU 70

NEW YORK - Okaro White scored 17 points and Florida State made 11 3-pointers in the Coaches vs, Cancer Classic semifinals at the Barclays Center.

FSU (2-1) made 11 of 20 3-pointers as it led by as many as 27 points in the second half.

Miami 73, Jacksonville 57

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Shane Larkin scored a career-high 27 points to lead Miami over Jacksonville (1-2).

Julian Gamble added 13 points for Miami (2-1).

Maryland 91,LIU Brooklyn 74

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Alex Len had 18 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, and Maryland (2-1) used its inside game to get past LIU Brooklyn (0-3).

Clemson 72, Furman 55

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Devin Booker scored 15 points to lead a balanced Clemson attack.

K.J. McDaniels scored 11 and Demarcus Harrison 10 as Clemson (2-0) ran its string of victories over the Paladins (1-2) to 29 straight.

Dayton 87, Boston College 71

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Dyshawn Pierre scored 23 points on 8-for-8 shooting to lead Dayton (2-1) in the Charleston Classic.

Joe Rahon had 16 points to lead Boston College (1-2).

LOCAL WOMEN

William Peace 68, Hollins 58

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Panthers built up a 20-point lead in the second half and held on to beat Hollins (0-1) in the first round of the Jackie Ammons Memorial Tournament.

Southern Virginia 74, Bennett 27

NEWPORT NEWS - Larissa Conger came off of the bench to score 18 points, and Mina Romito added 15 points and 10 steals to lead the Knights (1-0) over Bennett, N.C., (0-3) at the Great Ships Classic at the Apprentice School.
